The idea

The brief called for a formal Gothic sanctuary defined by scent, privacy, and architectural structure. While the site is fully enclosed by striking original stone walls, the design strategically preserves vistas overlooking Box and the surrounding parkland. The project extended to the front gardens, featuring a new planting scheme and hand-crafted chestnut cleft fencing.

The flora

To honour the Gothic aesthetic, we curated a dramatic palette of white, black, and burgundy. Mature Yew pyramids provide year-round stature, acting as structural anchors against the perennials.

The detail

A narrowing cobbled path paired with graduated topiary uses forced perspective to create a sense of scale and distance. At the garden’s midpoint, a classic rose arbor serves as a crossroads: directing the eye toward the Walled Garden on one side and the Formal Lawn on the other.
