Sweeping through newly terraced gardens
The idea
The garden was a disjointed, uninspiring sloping lawn split by a crumbling concrete path leading to nowhere. The client accessed their house through the back garden, so we reimagined the layout around a sweeping, intentional pathway that guides guests naturally to the door.
The flora
Occupying an exposed, south-facing hilltop, the planting scheme was chosen for resilience and sensory appeal. Hawthorn (Crataegus prunifolia) and Dwarf Mountain Pine (Pinus mugo) provide structural height, while a fragrant carpet of Thyme, Salvia, and Sicilian Chamomile soften the edges. Native wildflower plugs were integrated along the path and lawn margins.
The detail
A central circular lawn is framed by a reclaimed Cotswold drystone wall, which handles the site's elevation change. Integrating movement into the structure, a bespoke rill flows down the terracing, emerging into a minimalist concrete trough.
